The need is urgent to accelerate growth in our nation's #electronics #manufacturing capabilities and capacity. Technologies like advanced #PCBs and #ICSubstrates are crucial elements of modern electronics that are needed for everything from our energy grid to defense systems. While recognition of this need is growing, action is needed now. https://lnkd.in/g5qf89N3

"Just as the government is underwriting the future of the #semiconductor industry in places like Arizona and Ohio through the #CHIPSAct, so too must the government commit to making the next generation of printed circuit boards and integrated circuit substrates in the United States.” Op-ed in Defense News by John W Mitchell, IPC president and CEO, Travis Kelly, Chairman, Printed Circuit Board Association of America (PCBAA), and Nathan Edwards, executive director, USPAE, calls for Congress to adopt the House-passed funding level of approximately $618 million for the Defense Production Act and $1.08 billion for the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment Program. This funding will strengthen U.S. #PCB fabrication and revitalize the greater defense #electronics industrial base. Full op-ed here: https://hubs.li/Q02p9YxZ0

Working with trusted #electronics #manufacturing firms is an important step to not only protect your IP, but also to de-risk your #supplychains. Ensuring that suppliers guard against counterfeits, provide complete traceability, protect your IP and more will help increase supply chain reliability and resilience. Looking for #IPC1791 validation, a standard that was developed in collaboration between the United States Department of Defense and industry is a great place to start.
The protection of intellectual property (IP) in #electronics #manufacturing is key. One element often overlooked is that #PCBs are nearly always designed for a specific product or system. Sending the PCB design overseas conveys much of that product or system's IP to the outsourced facility. Relying instead on trusted PCB designers, manufacturers and assemblers will go a long way to helping protect your valuable IP. https://lnkd.in/eEufSxUZ

In addition to helping companies advance commercialization of #microelectronics technologies, the #DBX project led by U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE) demonstrated how the United States Department of Defense can move quickly. In one day, twenty-five finalists made a pitch, seven were chosen and contracts issued that day. Thanks to our partner ATI | Advanced Technology International, payments are being made within 48 hours of awardees completing the agreement. Three of those awardees had money in the bank before the end of last week and the others are happening this week. https://lnkd.in/ervr_z_7

We and our U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE) consortium members are really glad to be part of this, helping to fill critical gaps in the microelectronics area.
#DYK: To date in calendar year 2023 alone, the United States Department of Defense has made 22 awards through the Defense Production Act valued at more than $714 million. The Defense Production Act (DPA) Title III program targets investments that create, maintain, protect, expand, or restore critical domestic industrial base capabilities. DPA Title III has three broad focus areas: sustaining critical production, commercializing research and development investments, and scaling emerging technologies. This is an excellent report from ETI | Emerging Technologies Institute that identifies key #microelectronics challenges faced by the United States Department of Defense. Many of the issues identified are not easily solved, but the recommendations in this report are a great start. Great job Jacob Winn and Michael Fritze.
Check out ETI's new report, "Modernizing Defense Microelectronics: Challenges and Opportunities." Authored by Dr. Michael Fritze and Associate Research Fellow, Jacob Winn, this report investigates ways to keep defense microelectronics performances closer to the commercial state of the practice, and makes recommendations aimed at supporting more continuous upgrades and cost-effective acquisition practices. To address these issues, the ETI convened a workshop on microelectronics modernization and conducted a series of interviews in support of this report.
